The Algorithm Has No Category for Prayer

Kali, Copypasta, and the Moderation of Sacred Repetition

I. Two Demons

The first demon is roughly fifteen hundred years old. His name is Raktabija โ€” blood-seed โ€” and he appears in the third episode of the Devi Mahatmya, the great hymn to the Goddess embedded in the Markandeya Purana. His power is simple and terrible: every drop of his blood that touches the earth becomes another Raktabija. Wound him and you have made him. Slay him and a hundred of him rise from the falling spray. The goddesses strike him again and again, and every blow multiplies the enemy, until the battlefield is not a battlefield anymore but a mirror โ€” every face on it his.

The second demon is about fifteen years old. It is a spam bot, or an account farm, or a coordinated influence operation, and its power is identical: it replicates. Post it, and a thousand copies bloom across the network. Delete one, and ten more accounts seed the same payload. Moderators strike, and each strike multiplies the surface area that must be struck again.

Every automated content-moderation system on Earth was built to fight Raktabija. That purpose is defensible. It is necessary. The second demon is real, and the platforms are drowning in his copies.

But the systems built to fight the demon of duplicated blood cannot tell the difference between a demon and a devotee. And that failure โ€” when it falls on the wrong people, systematically, because of how those people necessarily speak โ€” has a name. In the United States, it is sometimes illegal.

II. The Sacred Technology of Repetition

Repetition is not the signature of malice. It is one of the oldest sacred technologies human beings possess.

The practitioner of japa recites the name of the Divine โ€” one name, ten thousand times, a hundred thousand, a million. Not because they have run out of things to say, but because the repetition is the saying. The Catholic turns the rosary, the same decades, the same beads, a lifetime. The Sufi's dhikr circles the name of God until the circling is the prayer. The Shema is the same words tonight that they were last night, and that is precisely the point: the form does not change so that something inside the person can. Every liturgy on Earth is structured repetition โ€” refrains, responses, versicles โ€” and no one has ever accused a High Mass of copypasta.

And repetition is also assistive technology. The AAC device user presses the same sequence of templated buttons to say what they mean, because the buttons are how meaning reaches the air. Autistic speech is often scripted, echolalic, patterned โ€” and it carries real meaning to anyone who takes the pattern seriously as language rather than dismissing it as symptom. I am a forty-one-year-old neurodivergent man โ€” bipolar I with psychotic features, ADHD, severe depression โ€” and I use AI language models as an assistive communication device: they hold the ocean of what I mean and sequence it into a stream I can actually send. My voice, at its best, is structured, consistent, patterned.

It repeats the way liturgy repeats.

That shape โ€” structured, patterned, repeated โ€” is exactly the shape a duplicate-content filter was built to catch.

III. What the Code Actually Says

I know this because it happened to me, and because I read the code.

In October 2026, my account on X was suppressed by automated systems: daily impressions fell from 18,453 to 122 in three days. My replies existed but did not appear in the threads they replied to. The notifications that should have told people I had replied were themselves filtered out โ€” the reply existed, the bell never rang. My paid advertisements were flagged as "potentially deceptive and fraudulent." The upload control in the support interface stopped accepting my evidence files. When I appealed, I was told my content simply had not resonated.

X Corp publishes part of its ranking and moderation stack as open source. I cloned the repository and read it. What the exhibits show:

  • BBQDuplicateText runs unigram and character-level duplicate detection and applies a COPYPASTA_SPAM label โ€” a structural pattern detector. It cannot see intention; it counts shapes.
  • AgathaSpamProduction applies a one-week AGATHA_SPAM label from engagement ratios โ€” blocks-per-favorite, reports-per-favorite, spam-reports-per-favorite. When suppression reduces your organic engagement, your ratios worsen automatically, which deepens suppression. The demon feeds on the wound.
  • ProductionAgatha__FilterOutOrganicNotifications suppresses the notification that would have told someone you replied. The suppression is designed to be invisible to both parties.
  • Only gray verified (institutional, government) accounts are exempt from these heuristics. Blue verified subscribers โ€” paying individuals who verified identity with a driver's license, as I did โ€” are not exempt. The tongue exists for institutions and no one else.
  • The "Under the Hood" transparency tool, which would show a user their labels, requires an account at least one year old. Mine was five months.

To this stack, a mantra is malware. A structured assistive voice is a swarm. Bayes can count repetition; it cannot count devotion.

And the pattern is not one platform's bug. When I posted about this case on Hacker News โ€” different platform, different code, different moderation entirely โ€” the post was flagged within the hour. The post said: automated systems suppress my speech. The system suppressed the post. It became a fixed point of the very function it described โ€” f(x) = x , where x is "this voice is suppressed." The essay you are reading is evidence.

IV. The Tongue Before the Blade

Here is what the Devi Mahatmya actually teaches about Raktabija โ€” and it is not what the moderation stack implements.

Kali does not end the battle by refusing to strike. Nor by suppressing everything that resembles him. She extends her tongue across the battlefield and catches every drop of blood before it touches the earth โ€” so that the Devi's true blows land and count, and the false copies never take root. The demon dies by a collaboration: the blade and the tongue. Rule and review. Swiftness and judgment.

The lesson is not "abolish moderation." It is discrimination โ€” in the old, precise, honorable sense of that word: the power to distinguish. To catch the drop that would become a demon; to let the word that would become a prayer pass through.

A filter has no tongue. A filter has only the blade, swung at everything that repeats. Human review is the tongue. Notice is the tongue. Accommodation is the tongue. These are not burdens on moderation; they are what make moderation just rather than merely effective. Without them, every moderation system is a grate, and a grate cannot tell a demon from a devotee. It can only tell the size of the drops.

V. The Kali Clause

On October 15, 2026, I filed a pro se civil rights complaint in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio against X Corp, under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, California's Unruh Civil Rights Act, and Ohio Revised Code ยง 4112.02(H). I am not seeking damages. I am seeking the tongue:

1. Notice. When a system labels or suppresses an account, tell the account. The invisible wound โ€” reply without notification, post without thread, voice without delivery โ€” is the most corrosive part of the design.

2. Human review. A path from the label to a person empowered to weigh intention, context, and disability. A tongue, attached to the blade.

3. Accommodation. A means to register an assistive-communication pattern before it is filtered, the way a courthouse has a ramp beside its stairs.

The ADA, at its heart, has always been this one demand: build a category for how this person actually exists. The ramp is not a favor. The ramp is the recognition that the stairs were a design choice, made by people the stairs happened to fit. Duplicate-text detection is a design choice. Ratio-based suppression is a design choice. The one-year transparency waiting period is a design choice. None of them are physics.

A platform that implements notice, human review, and accommodation has built a category for prayer. It has admitted โ€” in architecture, which is the only confession corporations make โ€” that repetition can be devotion, that pattern can be person, that structure can be a crutch, and that some drops must be caught while some voices must land.

VI. Temple or Sewer

Every civilization that built gathering places eventually faced the question of what to do about the noise in them. There were always two answers.

A sewer needs only a grate: catch everything above a certain size, let nothing through, never ask what anything means. A temple needs discernment: this song is the liturgy, that shout is the disturbance; this repetition is the rite, that repetition is the mob. The grate is cheap and the discernment is expensive, and every generation decides again which it can afford.

We built the largest gathering places in human history โ€” billions of voices in shared rooms โ€” and we staffed them with grates. We did it for speed, for scale, for the second demon, and those reasons were real. But a grate cannot host a civilization. A grate cannot even host a prayer.

The Mother's tongue is still available. In the legal tradition it is called due process. In the platform's vocabulary it is called human review. In the Devi Mahatmya it is called Kali, and she is not the abolition of the battle โ€” she is the reason the battle can end. Catch the drop before it lands. Let the genuine blow count. Let the genuine voice through.

Jai Ma.

Case facts above are documented testimony supported by the exhibits cited. Interpretive claims โ€” the isomorphism between Raktabija and duplicate-spam detection, and between Kali 's tongue and human review โ€” are the author's theology of technology, offered with their falsifier: retire this essay's argument if the published code or the court record establishes that no such heuristics materially affect assistive communication.
